Pepper Sprays are great nonlethal self defense weapons for students heading off to college or already attending school. Campus security may not always arrive in time when you or your student are in harms way. The peace of mind given to someone who knows they can defend themselves against an assailant is priceless.
Last month, a UCLA student used pepper spray to free herself from a man who assaulted and robbed her in early morning of May 6, 2014. The female student was walking just blocks from campus, when she was approached by the man, according to a news release from the UCLA Police Department. The type of pepper spray used was not identified, however, popular brands include: Pepper Shot Pepper Spray, Wild Fire Pepper Spray and Mace.
The assailant took her property and cell phone, by reaching into the student’s sweater pocket. Then, he forced her into his vehicle and proceeded to lift her skirt, police stated in the news release. The student told police she was able to use pepper spray on the man and escape.
Another student stated to KTLA news that she carries pepper spray because the UCLA campus cannot always respond to crimes immediately and she needs to be protected and feel safe. She further expressed to authorities she was inspired by the girl’s actions and will continue to carry and advocate the carrying of nonlethal self defense items for college students. The truth is, most people buy knives based on the way it looks and feels regardless if they are trained enough to use it properly. When choosing a knife, the handle, its blade, size and weight are all factors to take in to consideration when doing research for a self defense knife. A knife is a tool when you really think about and the decision to carry one should not be one made lightly. What is needed, is a tool that fits most comfortably in your hand so you can constantly, easily and most importantly safely use it on a daily basis.
If you’re considering purchasing a knife to defend yourself, do your due diligence and training when it comes to the legality of what is and is not considered self defense when carrying and using a knife. It is suggested not only check your local state laws about the type of knife and the legal carry size, but also your municipal codes in the city you reside. Check out the laws and regulations revolving around carrying a knife as a tool verses a weapon.
So, do people really need a big knife tool or a tactical anything unless it’s for purpose of hunting, actual survival or true tactical reasons? And if a person feels like they do, are they trained to use it?
For self defense purposes, the common folding knives seem to have become a staple both in society and the modern personal protection community. Small fixed blade knives have made a come up as they eliminate the need to open during an attack. A small fixed blade may be more efficient and dependable while the folding knife is better concealed. When carrying a folding knife for the purposes of personal self defense protection, it is imperative to optimize weapon for maximum access, deployment and concealment. Meaning knowledge and training are everything in this case because during an incident, things move very quickly. And you should have the proper self defense tool and training if ever in a situation regardless of the situation. See our entire online inventory at Secure Self Defense.
Stun guns are fantastic personal self defense weapons. One of the most popular types of stun gun is the flashlight stun gun. Versatile and depending on an individuals carrying preference, quite discrete. Typical designs come in designer models, an ordinary flashlight design, typical stun gun design, baton, hand gun simulated, walking cane, lipstick, and cell phone/ smartphone design.
All well suited to provide nonlethal protection against an attack. Many of the flashlights have a bright LED light. Not only will the light safely illuminate an area at night, but it can also help with protection. When shined in the eyes of an attacker, the ultra-bright light can have a temporary blinding effect allowing time to stun the person or get away, depending on the situation. Adding an extra layer of protection and peace of mind for its user. Flashlight stun guns are either fully rechargeable with the light bulb having a life of up to 100,000 hours or battery operated.
Do your homework before sporting the latest trends and possibly getting into some serious trouble. Although they go by many different names: Knuckle Dusters, Ring Knuckles, Fashion Knuckles, Wood Knuckles and so on know your state laws before wearing them.
Chapter 46 §46.05 of the Texas Penal Code the government writes that it is an offense to knowingly and intentionally possess, manufacture, transport or repair knuckles; typically regarded as a felony offense of the third degree, but in some cases, the charge can be reduced to a Class A misdemeanor.
Texas Penal Code, defined knuckles as any instrument that consists of finger rings or guards that are made of a hard substance and is used for the purpose of inflicting serious bodily injury or death. These weapons can be made of hard plastic, steel, brass or acrylic, and all are considered illegal. Normally, brass knuckles are used when a person strikes another with his or her fist. In some cases, possession of knuckles can be charged in addition to an assault charge or an assault with a deadly weapon charge depending on the circumstances.
Brass knuckles are often sold undercover as paperweights, jewelry, or other accessories. If the knuckles are purchased under these pretenses and the purchaser is not aware that the purchase is outlawed, then he or she will want an attorney on their side to defend them in the event of an arrest. Also, if they did not know about the law and bought brass knuckles from a dealer, they will want an attorney to represent them as well.
Once a stranger violates your personal bubble and tries to hurt you, honestly, all formalities go right out the window; and rightfully so. You absolutely cannot stray from doing what is necessary to incapacitate the violation and escape. It doesn’t matter the size or weight of a person, once threatened it is time to utilize the internal fight mode. A good start is with a thunderous scream or yelling “No!”
Often the assailant will attack with a one or two handed grab. Striking downwards , with a kubotan, onto the top of the hand, forearm, biceps or top of shoulder will allow you to maneuver out of the attackers’ range. Continue a sequence of defense strikes until the presence of danger is gone and an opportunity to escape is present.
When grabbed from behind, swing, as hard as possible, the Kubotan straight up and backward, striking in the face. Try swinging straight down or backward for a groin strike; it is irrelevant whether the aggressor is male or female.
In the event you are attacked from behind through a bear hug, with arms locked, put the end of the Kubotan on the top of the assailant’s hand and push down as hard as you can; stomp on their foot or the arch of their foot and this should allow you enough room to break free and run. Remember:
Try to stand shoulder width a part stance with knees slightly bent; stable and flexible.
Hammer Fist or Knife Stabbing Motion
The hand not holding the Kubotan should be in front of your body to block and protect.
Strike into the target, not at it; as if trying to go through it.
Do not reach around in a looping motion, but strike in a tight circle or jabbing line.
Strike quickly and deliberately.
Strike more than once.
Scream and or yell NO!

The Kubotan, sometimes called a pocket stick, is a close quarters self defense weapon used to target sensitive and pressure points of an assailant. They come in many different designs and styles such as; flat head, tapered, pointed and other more enhanced models.
Kubotans are intended to get used on the more boney, meaty and sensitive parts of the body:
Temple Eyes Bridges of the Nose Neck Solar Plexus Stomach Ribs Spine Forearms Knuckles Groin
A Kubotan is generally held in like a hammer for a hammer defense strike or forward grip a stab or pressure point defense strike. Typically, a person defending themselves will make a fist around the Kubotan to strike vulnerable parts of the attacker’s body gaining leverage on their wrist, fingers and joints. Being that Kubotans are often on key chains, the ring of keys acts as a flailing defense tool as well. As a pressure point and pain compliance weapon it can attack any point a finger can, but with greater penetration because of the smaller surface area at the ends. Kubotan key chains are appealing because they are easy to carry not a conspicuous weapon. Kubotans are very effective if used correctly. But, as with all tools and weapons, it takes good careful training with someone who knows what they are doing. Also, it should be carried in hand because messing looking for it or trying to get to it in a pocket or purse when needed won’t do any good. Being prepared and protected is the key.
Recently, a 17 year old Riverdale boy who ran into traffic to escape a loose pit bull was killed after a car struck him on Old National Highway. About 1 a.m., the young man got off a bus on Old National Highway and Hillside Road, and the pit bull chased him, according to the Fulton County Police Department. With the dog running behind him, he dashed into traffic and was struck by a car; killing the teen and the pit-bull. According to police, it was the second time that week a Georgia teen died after being struck by a car while running away from a dog.
In Killeen Texas a 2 years old, was killed by a bull mastiff while walking home from a playground. The toddler, along with an 8-year old girl and 18-year old man were walking on a sidewalk in a residential neighborhood when the animal charged out of its owner’s garage and attacked the girl. Witnesses were able to pry the large dog off the girl, according to police. The dog then attacked the toddler, latching onto him, dragging him down the street. An unknown person fired shots during the attack, scaring the canine, which fled back into its owner’s garage.
Often it can take several weeks to identify fatal canine attack parameters which mean the most current canine bite fatalities may not even appear as reported as they happen. Reportedly 1,000 Americans seek emergency care treatment for a canine bite injury; ranging from serious attacks on humans, disfigurement, and death. Any type of unwanted run in with an aggressive or in pursuit stray dog can be traumatic.
Especially now during the warming summer months, people are outside more than ever and so are dogs. So, it doesn’t matter if it’s your neighbors’ pet or a lost dog, it’s always best to be prepared. Carrying an animal repellent like Mace Muzzle and the Super Dog Chaser will give you and your loved ones confidence and the non-lethal self defense weapons necessary to protect against canine attacks.
Deliver liquid pepper spray directly in the targets face with a stream or broken stream of pepper. Streams often have a longer range than a forced cone pepper spray and have a low risk of pepper blow back. The chance of blow back is eminent if shooting into the air and the wind blows back your direction. The action of the sprayer is much like a water gun. Stream or broken stream sprayers also have the tendency to get used faster.
Forced Cone Spray:
Most of the smaller personal sized pepper spray sprayers are forced cone spray. The spray pattern is circular and covers a width of approximately two feet and ranges about six to 12 feet. The forced cone spray is a fine mist and is delivered in a forceful steady stream. The reaction is instantaneous to the spray.
Pepper Spray Foggers:
Disperse finer droplets than the forced cone and disperses wider. It is most effective in covering larger areas quickly and where direct aim is less critical. A pepper spray fogger can make a corridor unbearable in a very short time. The force with which the spray is dispersed is considerable. The aggressor will always receive the majority of the spray even in windy conditions. Spray from a pepper spray fogger style sprayer is the fastest acting of pepper spray choices.
Pepper Spray Foams:
This type of spray uses many effective ingredients in its thick, heavy foam. Foam pepper spray layers the target well and the wind has very little effect over the spray. The effects are immediate, debilitating and worsen as the target tries to remove it, unknowingly rubbing it further into the skin. Foam sprayers allow the spray to pile up, rather than running off, and are practically impossible to wipe off without help.
